Thursday, 3 December

Class began by updating / changing the "Word Trace" assignment. Students were told that rather than tracing all the occurrences of their word in one act that they should trace at least three occurrences of their word in each of the next four acts of the play.

Next the class discussed and practiced the concept of Text: the words printed or spoken and Sub-text" the meaning "behind" the literal text. The class practiced adding subtext to a variety of lines.

The class tossed some lines from Act II:

Is this a dagger which I see before me,
The handle toward my hand?                                            2.1.44-45

I have done the deed.                                                        2.2.19

Me thought I heard a voice cry “Sleep no more!
Macbeth does murder sleep”                                                      2.2.47-48

A little water clears us of this deed                                            2.2.86

There’s daggers in mens’ smiles.  The near in blood,                  2.3.165-168

The nearer bloody.

Then the class read Act II scene i. The class practiced writing prompt book directions for II.i.27 I think not of them.

Periods 6 and 8 have homework to write one entry for their word trace from II.i.
